Reigning A-10 Pitcher of the Week tosses second-straight complete game with 10 Ks
ARLINGTON, Va. - Following the resumption of Saturday's suspended game that saw VCU finish off an 11-4 victory on Sunday afternoon, GW baseball headed into the rubber game of the series one game behind a five-way tie for fourth place in the A-10. The Colonials handed the ball to Chris Kahler, the reigning A-10 Pitcher of the Week, and the junior delivered another gem in a 3-2 triumph that moved the Buff & Blue to 6-6 in the league.
Kahler, who tossed a complete game last Sunday at Fordham and earned the conference's weekly honor, was arguably even better against this set of Rams. He set down the first eight batters he faced before a walk and a double play. He faced the minimum through 5.2 innings before a two-out error and a clean single ended his no-hit bid.
He battled back with a strikeout to keep VCU off the board and then set the side down in order in the 7th. GW's offense had staked Kahler to a lead thanks to solo home runs from Eddie Micheletti in the fourth and Robby Wacker leading off the fifth. Anthony Frechette made it 3-0 with an RBI single in the sixth.
VCU finally cracked Kahler's case via a two-run homer from Nic Ericsson in the top of the eighth, drawing the visitors within one. A walk followed, but Kahler buckled down with a flyout and strikeout to strand the tying run.
In the ninth, Kahler allowed a leadoff single, but the runner never moved past first as he coaxed a flyout, notched his 10th punchout of the day and then acrobatically covered first on a groundout to end the game.
Kahler's performance was his third complete game of the season and improved his record to 3-3 on the year. He needed 120 pitches to do it, matching his career-best with 10 Ks against just four hits and two walks.
Micheletti was the leader offensively, going 3-for-3 with the homer and two runs scored. He has now hit safely in 10 consecutive games, including nine-straight multi-hit affairs.
The Buff & Blue will hit the road for its lone mid-week game this week, taking on William & Mary on Tuesday. First pitch from Williamsburg, Va., is scheduled for 6 p.m.
