Davis delivers quality effort in first career start
TOWSON, Md. - A seven-run first inning and a quality start from a first-year hurler led GW baseball to one of its most dominant triumphs of the year, a 12-1 thumping of Towson on Tuesday afternoon.
A month removed from a 21-11 setback to the Tigers at home, GW left no doubt in exacting revenge. The Colonials scored seven times before taking the field defensively, securing control of the contest. Noah Levin started the onslaught with an RBI single while Alexander Wright delivered the big blow with a three-run double later in the frame. Sam Gates, who walked to start the game capped off the outburst with an RBI single to add the extra point in a seven-run frame.
The story then turned to first-year Cade Davis, making just his second appearance of the season and first start of his career. Davis took the opportunity and ran with it, taming the Tigers over the course of 6.1 innings for a quality start and the first win of his time in Buff & Blue. The Bloomsburg, Pa., native pitched to contact with just two strikeouts and one walk, but yielded just a single run on five hits.
Chris Knight and Shugy Klein combined for 2.2 hitless innings out of the bullpen to finish off the win.
Offensively, GW added single tallies in the third, fourth, sixth, seventh and ninth innings to add to its cushion. Michael Kohn drove in three to match Wright with team-high honors. Gates finished with a pair of hits and two driven in.
GW will now look to sweep its mid-week contests against CAA foes when it welcomes Delaware to The Tuck on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
