Baseball Drops Middle Game at Dayton, 8-6

DAYTON, Ohio - Looking to win the middle game of the A-10 season-opening series at Dayton and keep its chances alive for a second straight weekend sweep, GW sent first-year Teddy Brennan to the hill as he tried to build upon a remarkable start last weekend. Brennan worked into the fourth and piled up four Ks against just two walks, but like in George Washington's 11-8 victory Friday, offense once again ruled the day in Dayton in an 8-6 setback for the home club.
Tim Nicholson continued to swing a hot stick for GW and staked his club to an early 2-0 lead after tripling in Michael Kohn and Robby Wacker in the top of the second. Dayton registered the next seven runs though, five of which came on solo dingers, forcing the Buff and Blue offense to play comeback.
In the top of the seventh, Kohn and Wacker raced home again, this time courtesy of a Bryan Belo single, cutting the deficit to three at 7-4, and after Wacker joined the home run party with a two-run job in the 8th that plated Eddie Micheletti as well, GW was back within a run. However, yet another Flyer solo shot in the bottom half of the inning gave Dayton some breathing room and accounted for the final margin.
For the second day in a row, seven home runs in all were hit with the help of the Ohio wind, but unfortunately six came off the bats of the Flyers today. Wacker finished 1-for-3 with his home run, three runs scored and a pair of RBI, while GW's pitching struck out 10 Dayton hitters while only issuing three free passes.
The rubber game of the series comes tomorrow afternoon at noon in Dayton, live on ESPN+.
