Buff & Blue open conference slate with three-game series
WASHINGTON - GW baseball is set to open up Atlantic 10 Conference play this weekend with a three-game series against the Dayton Flyers. First pitch on Friday is set for 3 p.m. with a 1 p.m. start on Saturday and noon opener on Sunday. Friday and Sunday's game will be on ESPN+ and Saturday's game will air on ESPN3.
ON THE LEDGE OF HISTORY: Senior Noah Levin enters the weekend with 199 career hits and 149 career RBI during his five-year career. With one more in each category, Levin would become just the ninth player to don the Buff & Blue with 200 career hits and 150 career RBI. He also holds 19 homers to his credit and would become the 23rd player in program history to hit at least 20 long balls.
THE GATEKEEPER: Sophomore Sam Gates has been providing a spark for the Buff & Blue at the top of the order, hitting safely in six-straight games, four of which have been multi-hit affairs. Gates has twice scored four runs in a game this season and he collected his fourth three-hit game of the campaign on Tuesday vs. James Madison. Gates tops the team with 23 runs scored and 56 total bases and is second on the team with a .336 average and .446 OBP.
A LOOK AT THE FLYERS: Dayton was projected to finish fifth in the A-10 preseason poll and sits at 5-18 after dropping its last five, including a sweep at the hands of Georgetown last weekend. UD is 12th in the league in batting average (.232) and fourth in ERA (6.69). Ben Jones leads the offense for Dayton with a .384 average that ranks third in the circuit.
GW took two of three from the Flyers last season at Tucker Field and is 45-22 all-time against their A-10 foe.
