Micheletti drives in four in setback
LAKE CHARLES, La. - GW baseball saw a comeback effort slip through their fingertips in Sunday's series finale at McNeese State, falling to the Cowboys, 7-6.
GW faced a pair of three-run deficits, 3-0 and 5-2, but took a 6-5 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning before the host Cowboys tied the game on an infield single and took the lead for good on a wild pitch.
The Colonials, who had been held scoreless in each of the first two games, fell behind 3-0 through three innings before Eddie Micheletti launched a two-run homer in the top of the fourth to get the Buff & Blue on the board.
McNeese countered with two in the home half of the fourth to regain the three-run cushion, but GW immediately answered themselves in the fifth. A leadoff error started the rally that culminated in a pair of RBI singles from Bryan Belo and Steve DiTomaso.
Two innings later, still trailing by a run, Micheletti came up with a two-out, two-run single to put the Buff & Blue ahead for the first time on the day. Unfortunately, GW's bullpen was unable to close out the lead as the Cowboys earned the series sweep.
Micheletti's four RBIs paced the offense as he joined DiTomaso and Belo with mulit-hit days.
Chris Kahler, coming off a complete-game win last week, struck out seven in four innings of work. Teddy Brennan tossed two scoreless frames of relief while Chris Knight was charged with the loss.
GW now will head back to the east coast and return to action on Tuesday when it visits Delaware. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
