Lake Charles, La. -- At Joe Miller Ballpark, GW baseball took the field looking to take the middle game of a three-game set at McNeese State after dropping a crisp, 2-0, ballgame yesterday. Now George Washington will have to look to Sunday to salvage the series after going down quietly, 7-0, Saturday.
McNeese got the only run it would need in the bottom of the first, playing small ball and taking advantage of two GW errors, with a stolen base in between, and a sac fly to plate the run. The Buff and Blue had a chance to tie it up in the top of the second with Anthony Frechette on third base with one out after doubling and moving up 90 feet on a fly ball off the bat of Noah Levin, but he was ultimately stranded there.
The Cowboys plated another run in the bottom of the second, and their hurler, Derrick Cherry, was reasonably efficient over his 5.1 innings of work, throwing 79 pitches, striking out six while walking just two and only allowing three hits to earn the win.
A pair of runs in the fourth and the fifth extended the home team's lead to 6-0 and they later tacked on another run in the 7th. GW pitchers kept the ball in the yard, but McNeese used 10 hits, four of the extra-base variety, and nine walks to tax the GDUB arms.
Frechette hit another double in the contest, finishing 2-for-4 out of the clean-up spot while doing the catching duties behind the plate.
Sunday's finale comes at noon with GW looking to notch its first road win of the young campaign.
