Colonials fall to Dukes, 8-7
The Buff & Blue got the best start of the year from hurler Austin Odell, who limited JMu to just a run on five hits in six strong innings to set his team up for success. Unfortunately, the Dukes battered the Colonial bullpen, with the first four reaching in the seventh and all eventually coming around to score, knotting the game at five.
An inning later, Jack Cone put JMU ahead with a two-run double and an error later in the frame gave the Dukes and extra insurance tally.
GW's offense, which got a first-inning RBI from Anthony Frechette and scored three times in the second via knocks from Sam Gates and Steve DiTomaso, got a run closer in the bottom of the eighth with a two-out RBI single from Eddie Micheletti Jr.
Down to its final out in the bottom of the ninth, GW strung three straight hits together, including a pinch-hit RBI single from Tim Nicholson. With the tying run 90 feet away, JMU's Hunter Entsminger entered to retire Gates on a flyout to left, curtaling the Colonial comeback bid.
Gates reached four times out of the leadoff spot, going 3-for-4 with a double, run scored and an RBI. DiTomaso was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two driven in and Micheletti, Noah Levin and Michael Kohn contributed two hits each as part of the 15-hit attack.
GW will now look to a new portion of its season as A-10 play begins this weekend with a three-game series at Dayton. First pitch in the series opener on Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
