ARLINGTON, Va. - After a Friday postponement due to rain allowed for an extra day of rest for the pitching staff, the GW arms came out raring to go and attacked the Manhattan lineup from the opening pitch.
Former MLB draftee Logan Koester, who was selected in the 32nd by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2019 but opted to attend GW instead, hurled 6.1 innings while allowing only one unearned run, striking out six while scattering four hits amongst three walks. Relieved by Duke transfer and graduate student Michael Foltz in the top of the seventh, Koester cheered on Foltz as he induced an inning-ending 5-3 double play to escape a bases loaded jam, and Foltz took it the rest of the way without allowing a baserunner. Foltz's final line included zero hits, zero walks and three Ks, saving the win for Koester. Combined, GW set down nine Jaspers hitters by strikeout while only yielding four hits and three walks.
Manhattan's pitching was almost equal to the task, getting seven innings of two-run ball from BC-transfer Will Hesslink, but the Buff and Blue offense got to the southpaw for the only two runs it would need.
Grad student Michael Kohn had his hands in both runs, first with an RBI base knock to right that plated Noah Levin in the second, then he came around to score GW's second run in the fourth on an RBI single to short off the bat of Sam Gates. Kohn finished with two of GW's five hits on the day.
The game was played in a crisp 1:57 on account of the classic pitchers' duel.
Yesterday's postponement will be made up as part of a doubleheader Sunday when these two teams do battle again. First pitch in the double dip is slated for 11 a.m. at The Tuck, with the second game to follow 30 minutes after the first one concludes.
