Kohn smacks grand slam to pace offense
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - GW baseball's Tuesday night contest at Maryland, its first against the local foe in seven years, unfortunately followed a difficult script for the Buff & Blue. The visitors held a lead in the later innings, but the host Terps scored six times in the eighth to earn a 9-6 triumph.
Facing its second "Power 5" foe in as many weeks, GW fell behind early by allowing two homers in the first inning, but responded with a long ball of their own, a grand slam from Michael Kohn in the second inning.
The lead grew to 5-2 in the fourth via a Tim Nicholson RBI groundout. All of that came in support of first-year hurler Max Haug, who authored five strong innings, allowing just two runs on six hits with four strikeouts.
Maryland, though, took advantage of the GW bullpen with a run in the sixth and then a back-breaking six tallies in the home half of the eighth. Back-to-back, two-out homers in the frame lifted the Terps to a lead they would not relinquish despite a rally attempt from GW in the ninth.
The Buff & Blue will now hope for some home cooking this weekend at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park in a series vs. Manhattan. First pitch on Friday is set for 3 p.m.
