Micheletti delivers walk-off RBI single
WASHINGTON - Eddie Micheletti went 2-4, including a game-winning RBI single and a highlight-reel diving catch in right field, to help lift GW over Binghamton, 4-3. The series will now be decided in game three, which is set for noon tomorrow at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
The Colonials fell behind early on. A Bearcat sac-fly in the first inning gave Binghamton a 1-0 lead, and the lead was then doubled in the fourth inning with a RBI groundout.
Binghamton's two-run lead lasted just a half-inning as Alexander Wright, who had a team-high two RBI, pushed a run home with a RBI groundout in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Wright struck again in the sixth inning, collecting his second RBI and tying the game with a looping single that landed just in front of the Bearcats' right fielder. Michael Kohn, who had doubled in the prior at-bat, came in to score and even things up at two through six innings.
The game remained tied until the top of the ninth inning, when a Binghamton solo home run looked to be a game-winner for the visitors.
In the last of the ninth and down one run, the Colonials rallied. Logan Leax walked to start the inning, and was pushed over to second by a Tim Nicholson flyout. Ty Acker then walked, which brought up Sam Gates with runners on first and second. In a 2-2 count, Gates ripped the ball into right field, scoring Leax and pushing the game-winning run to third.
Then with two outs and runners on second and third, it was Micheletti's turn to play hero. In a 1-1 count, the junior from Wilmington, Del., crushed the ball up the middle and into center field, closing out the win for the Colonials.
Christopher Kahler went 7 innings for GW, allowing two runs (one earned) off four hits. Michael Foltz picked up the win, his first of the season, after pitching the final two innings and allowing just one run off one hit.
GW returns to Barcroft Park tomorrow to close out the series against Binghamton. First pitch is at noon, and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
