Colonials rack up 10 runs and 12 hits on Wednesday
ARLINGTON, Va. - George Washington baseball enjoyed a strong offensive performance on Wednesday afternoon, scoring 10 runs on 12 hits while taking advantage of three fielding errors in a 10-3 victory over UMES at Tucker Field.
The Colonials' offense struck early against the Hawks, plating its opening run in the first inning after Steve DiTomaso singled, stole second, and then came around to score on a base hit by Mike Ludowig. However, despite the early lead, GW would trail 2-1 in the top of the second inning after a pair of back-to-back singles turned into a pair of runs. While the Hawks were able to put two more baserunners on in the second, Colonials' starter Jon Brus buckled down and escaped further damage.
In the bottom part of inning two, GW took the lead back for good. With Logan Leax and Ty Acker on second and third, Cade Fergus hit a ground ball that the UMES infield was unable to make a play on. Both Leax and Acker scored on the Hawks' error, and GW went back in front, 3-2.
In total, seven different Colonials picked up a hit Wednesday, with several individuals having big afternoons. DiTomaso went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a pair of runs scored, while Ludowig, Derek Ripp, and Anthony Frechette all had multi-hit games. Additionally, Fergus and Acker both picked up a hit and had two runs scored on the afternoon.
GW also received strong relief pitching Wednesday. Chris Kahler earned the win after throwing a pair of scoreless innings, while Rich Pfluger allowed just two hits across three innings of work.
Up next, GW will continue its homestand when it welcomes Nigara to the Tuck for a three-game weekend series. First pitch of Friday's opener is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
