WASHINGTON - George Washington baseball returns to action on Friday when it hosts Niagara in a three-game series from Tucker Field at Barcroft Park. First pitch for Friday's action is scheduled for 3 p.m., while game two will get underway at 1 p.m. on Saturday, and game three is slated for 12 p.m. Sunday.
LAST TIME OUT:
GW finished off a 2-0 start to the week when it cruised by UMES on Wednesday, 10-3. The Buff & Blue enjoyed a strong offensive performance against the Hawks, compiling 12 hits and scoring double-digit runs for the third time this year. Steve DiTomaso went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a pair of runs scored, while Mike Ludowig, Derek Ripp and Anthony Frechette all had multi-hit games.
KEEPING THEM OFF THE BOARD:
Over the last five games, GW's pitching staff has been dominant. Blue & Blue pitchers have combined for a 1.26 ERA over their last fifty innings while allowing just seven earned runs, their fewest over a five-game span since 2017 (March 18-25).
The Colonials have also had success keeping opponents off the base paths over the last five contests. Opponents are batting just .204, while GW pitchers have only allowed six walks.
LEADOFF FERGUS:
This week against UMBC and UMES, Colonials' center fielder Cade Fergus returned to the leadoff spot for the first time since last season and made an instant impact. Fergus went 3-for-8 with three runs scored and a stolen base.
GW has had strong production this season from its leadoff spot. Entering this weekend, Fergus, Logan Leax and Tim Nicholson have all seen time in the lineup's first position and have combined to bat .336, with 21 hits, and an on-base percentage of .382.
SCOUTING THE PURPLE EAGLES:
Niagara will enter this weekend's contest against GW having gotten off to a rough start in 2022. The Purple Eagles are currently 2-12 and have been outscored 138-48. The Purple Eagles have had four of their last five scheduled contests canceled.
Josh Marchese is the name to know offensively for Niagara. The senior leads the team in batting average (.282) and OPS (.956) and is tied for the team lead in home runs (4).
