The Colonials and Gamecocks will begin their three game series Friday at 4:00 p.m. on ESPN+
WASHINGTON- George Washington baseball will look to pick up its first wins of the season when it travels to South Carolina to face off with the Gamecocks from Founders Park in Columbia. Harrison Cohen will toe the rubber for GW in Friday's opener, followed by Connor Harris and Justin Solt getting the ball on Saturday. Due to inclement weather Sunday in South Carolina, the Colonials and Gamecocks will play a double header on Saturday afternoon. First pitch for game one on Saturday is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT:
GW made its long-awaited return to the diamond against UTRGV last weekend, but errors did the team in as the Vaqueros rolled to a three-game sweep. The Colonials made eight errors in three games, including four in the first four innings of last Saturday's contest.
Despite last weekend's results, there were encouraging signs for GW's offense. The Buff & Blue notched 20 hits in three games against the Vaqueros pitching.
THE L&L BOYS:
Last weekend against UTRGV, Logan Leax and Michael Ludowig were GW's top offensive performers. Ludowig, who transferred to GW from Wake Forest, had a strong Buff & Blue debut, going 4-for-10 across three games, with two doubles, a run scored, and two stolen bases. Meanwhile Leax, who ended last year with a .313 average, started off the 2022 campaign going 4-for-8.
SCOUTING THE GAMECOCKS
When GW takes the field this weekend, they'll do it against one of the most successful college baseball teams of the last half-century. Since 1970, South Carolina baseball has posted 33 NCAA Tournament appearances, 11 College World Series berths, and two National Championships (2010 and 2011).
The Gamecocks 2022 campaign will feature the same expectations of success, as South Carolina was one of nine teams in the SEC picked to advance to an NCAA Regional by D1Baseball.com.
Leading the way for the Gamecocks is sophomore pitcher Will Sanders, who the Buff & Blue will face on Friday night. Sanders, who was named to the Preseason All-SEC Second Team, sported a 3.54 ERA and struck out 54 batters in 53.1 innings last year.
