Colonials and Rams renew acquaintances in four-game set
WASHINGTON - GW baseball is back in action after a nine-day break, hosting VCU at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park this weekend to open Atlantic 10 play. All four games will be streamed on ESPN+. Friday's first pitch is set for 3 p.m. with noon starts on Saturday and Sunday.
SOMETHING'S DIFFERENT: As part of the A-10 schedule this season, conference weekends will feature four game series - a single nine-inning game on Fridays and Sundays sandwiched around two seven-inning games on Saturdays. GW will also only play teams in its pod - VCU, Davidson, Saint Louis, George Mason, Richmond and Dayton. Of GW's six conference opponents, five were projected to be among the top six teams in the league.
HE JUST KEEPS HITTING: Steve Barmakian has hit safely in all but one game this season and extended his hitting streak to a career-best 14 games last Tuesday vs. Virginia. Barmakian is the only Colonial to reach base safely in all 17 games and has registered nine multi-hit games already this season. As a result, the graduate student is up to second in the A-10 in hitting (.403) and hits per game (1.59). He's also the hardest player in the circuit to strikeout with just one K every 13.4 at-bats.
TOP OF THE LEAGUE...AGAIN: GW enters the weekend 10th in the country in team batting average at .303 and 25th in the NCAA with a .399 team OBP. The view from the top of the league is nothing new for the Buff & Blue, who have led the A-10 in average each of the last two full seasons (2018 & 2019).
ABOUT THE RAMS: VCU was projected as the preseason favorite in the league and is 15-11 thus far with an RPI of 97. The Rams lead the A-10 scoring with 7.3 runs per game, just ahead of GW's 7.0 rpg. Tyler Locklear has been the main power threat, ranking second in the nation with 12 home runs while driving in a league-best 31 RBI. On the mound, VCU is fourth in the circuit with a 4.73 ERA.
GW is 15-23 against VCU all-time, with the last meeting in 2019 when the Rams took two out of three in Richmond.
