Rams come back for 6-4 triumph
ARLINGTON, Va. - GW baseball got off to a hot start against the A-10 preseason favorite VCU in Friday's conference opener, but the Rams stormed back with six runs in the final five innings to swipe a 6-4 victory.
GW (9-9, 0-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead through four innings thanks to a sacrifice fly from Eddie Micheletti in the second and RBI singles from Domenic Boselli and Anthony Frechette in the fourth.
VCU (16-11, 1-0) chipped away with a run in the fifth, but was otherwise held in check by Rich Pfluger, who was thrust into emergency duty four outs into the game after Elliott Raimo left with an apparent injury.
Pfluger, who was dealt the tough-luck loss, allowed three straight hits to begin the seventh inning, as VCU tied the game at 3. The Rams added two more tallies later in the frame and tacked on an insurance tally in the eighth.
The Buff & Blue had a chance to get right back in it in the bottom of the seventh after loading the bases with two outs for Steve Barmakian, who had three hits in three prior at-bats to extend his hitting streak to 15 games. Barmakian scorched a ball, but right at the shortstop to end the rally.
Micheletti added his second sac fly in the eighth inning, but the Colonials left the tying runs on and didn't threaten in the ninth.
The two teams continue their four-game series on Saturday with a pair of seven-inning games. First pitch of game one is set for 12 p.m.
