Colonials carried lead into the seventh inning of eventual 7-1 setback
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Redshirt sophomore Harrison Cohen silenced the nation's sixth-best offense through six innings on Friday night before #19 Tennessee's bats awoke with seven runs in its final two-at bats to take the series opener, 7-1, at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Cohen was superb in his 6.1 frames, keeping the Vols off balance throughout his start. After working around some traffic early on, Cohen retired 10 straight batters from the third to the sixth. In the process, GW became the first team to hold Tennessee, which entered averaging 11.2 runs per game, without a tally through the first two innings all season.
The Colonials also became the first team to score first against the Volunteers this year, doing so via an RBI double in the top of the fourth from sophomore Noah Levin that scored junior Tyler Hix all the way from first.
Cohen carried the 1-0 lead into the seventh before allowing a leadoff homer and an infield single two batters later to end his day after 6.1 frames. He was ultimately charged with two runs on nine hits with three strikeouts.
Tennessee then came to life against the Colonials' bullpen, taking a 3-1 lead later in the inning on an RBI groundout and a bases-loaded hit by pitch. UT then blew the game open with a grand slam in the eighth.
The series continues on Saturday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m.
