Colonials look for first win over ranked foe since 2015
WASHINGTON - Off to its best start in five years, GW baseball hits the road this weekend for a premier matchup with #19 Tennessee in Knoxville. First pitch on Friday and Saturday is scheduled for 4 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. matinee on Sunday.
PARTY LIKE IT'S 2015: GW is 6-2 for the first time since the 2015 campaign, as the team opened that year with a 7-2 mark. That year was also the last season in which the Colonials bested a ranked foe, defeating #16 Maryland in College Park, 12-1.
201 AND COUNTING: Head coach Gregg Ritchie celebrated his 200th win as the leader of his alma mater in Tuesday's win over UMBC before picking up win #201 on Wednesday. Ritchie, in his eighth year at GW, is the third coach in program history to achieve 200 wins at the helm of the Colonials. He is one win shy of tying Steve Mrowka (2005-12) for the second-most wins in program history.
CLOSE TO THE VEST: The Colonials' three-run win on Wednesday was the second-largest margin of victory so far this season, trailing only the 7-3 win on opening night at Nicholls State. All eight of GW's games have been decided by four runs or less this year, including two one-run games (1-1) and three contests decided by two runs (3-0).
PITCHING AND DEFENSE: The primary reason that GW has been able to win close games this year is its defensive combination. The Colonials enter the weekend with the best ERA (2.38) and fielding percentage (.980) in the A-10. Both are ranked among the top 40 nationally. Two of GW's three weekend starters, Harrison Cohen and Justin Solt, have authored a quality start already this year while the third, Elliott Raimo, has given up just one earned run in 9.1 innings.
ABOUT THE VOLUNTEERS: Tennessee is a perfect 9-0 to begin the year, moving into four of the six national top 25 polls following wins over #1 Texas Tech and #25 Stanford at the Round Rock Classic last weekend. The Vols are second in the SEC, and sixth nationally, in scoring at 11.2 runs per game and also rank among the NCAA's top 10 in walks drawn (71, 1st), home runs (16, 2nd), hits (98, 7th), and slugging percentage (.533, 9th). On the mound, UT is tops in the SEC, and sixth nationally, with a 1.56 ERA. As a result, Tennessee is one of 15 remaining unbeatens in college baseball.
