Colonials and Red Foxes meet for first time since 2011
WASHINGTON - GW baseball is set to host its first home series of the season this weekend, welcoming in Marist for a three-game set. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Friday followed by a 1 p.m. start Saturday and noon first pitch on Sunday. Friday's game will be streamed live on ESPN+ and admission is free to all three games.
LAST TIME OUT: GW won its home opener, 3-2, over Georgetown to improve to 94-44-1 all-time against its most common opponent. The Colonials manufactured their three runs on only four hits and rode a strong pitching performance from five hurlers to improve to 2-1 on the campaign.
MOWING 'EM DOWN: Senior Keagan McGinnis has been downright filthy in his first two appearances, recording 11 of his 13 outs this season via the K. He struck out seven in his season debut last Friday before escaping a bases-loaded, no-out situation with a strikeout and two flyouts on Tuesday. McGinnis is sixth in the nation in K/9 (22.85), and has the top rate of any pitcher with multiple appearances.
KINGS OF THE HILL: GW has been buoyed by its pitching staff early this year, leading the A-10 with a 1.73 ERA. The Colonials also own the league's best mark in strikeout-to-walk ratio (8.75), WHIP (0.96) and fewest walks per 9 IP (1.38). All three statistics rank among the nation's top 25 through the first week.
TWO-OUT MAGIC: While the Colonials' offense hasn't hit full gear yet, the clutch knocks have been there with six of GW's 10 runs this year coming with two away. Sophomore Noah Levin drove in a two-out run on Tuesday after the Buff & Blue picked up five two-out RBIs in the season opener against Nicholls last Friday.
ABOUT THE RED FOXES: Marist is 1-2 following a tightly-contested opening series at South Florida that featured a pair of extra-inning games. Reece Armitage, a Preseason All-MAAC selection, headlined the Red Foxes offense at USF by hitting .385 with a double and three runs scored. Alex Pansini was named the MAAC's Pitcher of the Week after throwing six scoreless innings on Friday against the Bulls.
Marist owns an 8-3 all-time mark against GW, sweeping the last two series in 2010 and 2011. The Red Foxes were projected to finish sixth in the MAAC preseason poll.
