GW's home opener set for 2:30 p.m. against crosstown rival
WASHINGTON -Â GW baseball is set to open its home campaign at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park on Tuesday afternoon, welcoming in crosstown rival Georgetown. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
Â
OVER THE WEEKEND:Â The Colonials split the first two games of the 2020 season, besting Nicholls State, 7-3, and falling in a pitchers' duel to SIUE at the Baseball on the Bayou Classic. Sunday's finale was rained out. GW received a pair of quality starts on the hill from redshirt sophomore Harrison Cohen and junior Justin Solt to start the campaign.
MOUND PRESENCE:Â The back-to-back quality starts are an impressive sign for GW after the team authored just 11 such starts all of last season. The Colonials allowed the fewest runs of any A-10 team over the weekend and posted an impressive 24-to-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Senior Keagan McGinnis is the only player in the nation with multiple innings pitched to record all of his outs on the mound via strikeout after his 7 punchouts in 2.1 innings Friday.
IMPRESSIVE DEBUTS:Â First-year Joe Biancone was instrumental in GW's 7-3 win over Nicholls on Friday, providing a pair of two-strike, two-out, two-run singles to stake the Colonials to an early advantage. He and classmate Ervin Bogan accounted for five of GW's 12 knocks Friday with Bogan scoring a pair of runs.
ABOUT THE HOYAS:Â Georgetown is 1-2 after falling in a neutral-site series with Navy over the weekend in Thomasville, N.C. The Hoyas won the season opener 16-6 before falling in back-to-back games, 6-2 and 6-3. AJ Lotsis led Georgetown offensively with three home runs in the first three games, driving in eight runs in the process. Freddy Achecar (6 RBI) and Ryan Davis (4) combined with Lotsis to provided 18 of the team's 21 runs.
SERIES HISTORY:Â Tuesday is the 139th installment of the District Rivalry with GW owning a commanding 93-44-1 edge in the all-time series. Each team won by double digits on the other's home field a year ago with Georgetown winning 14-4 at the Tuck and the Buff & Blue returning the favor with an 18-6 romp in April.
