Colonials improve to 1-0 at The Tuck
ARLINGTON, Va. - Making its home debut, GW baseball relied on excellent pitching and an opportunistic offense to down Georgetown, 3-2, on Tuesday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
The Colonials (2-1) pushed across single runs in the second, third and fifth innings to go in front, and the bullpen shut down the Hoyas to finish out the victory.
In his season debut after Sunday's scheduled start in Louisiana was washed out, Elliott Raimo tossed the first four innings, giving up just one unearned run on three hits with five strikeouts, earning the victory in the process.
Keagan McGinnis continued his strong start to the season, coming on with the bases loaded and no one out in the seventh inning and limiting the Hoyas to one run. The senior right-hander recorded four of his six outs via strikeout and has now tallied 11 strikeouts in 4.1 innings on the season.
Trevor Kuncl came on for the ninth and worked around a one-out hit batter to record his first save of the season and the second of his career. The junior right-hander finished the victory with a strikeout, the 11th by Colonials' pitching on the day.
GW needed just four hits to manufacture its three runs.
A Noah Levin walk followed by a Joe Biancone single and a Derek Ripp sacrifice fly put the Colonials up 1-0 in the second inning. They made it 2-0 an inning later when Steve Barmakian doubled and scored on Levin's two-out RBI single.
GW's final run came in the fifth when Cade Fergus led off with a walk, stole second and scored on a single by Tyler Hix, which turned out to be the Buff and Blue's final hit of the game.
Levin reached three times with the single and two walks, while Barmakian, Hix and Biancone provided the other hits.
GW continues a six-game homestand this weekend with a three-game series at The Tuck vs. Marist. First pitch in Friday's opener is at 2:30 p.m.
