Colonials’ starters allow combined three earned runs in pair of quality starts
ARLINGTON, Va. - GW baseball rode its starting pitching to a doubleheader split on Saturday afternoon against Davidson at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park to open the three-game weekend series.
The Wildcats claimed the first game, 3-0, but the Colonials rebounded with a thrilling 6-5 triumph in the nightcap. The two sides will square off in the rubber match on Sunday at noon.
Davidson 3, GW 0: A pitcher's duel started the series with junior Elliott Raimo going toe-to-toe with Davidson starter Casey Sutherland. Raimo's only blemish came in the third after two walks and a hit batter led to a two-run single and a 2-0 edge for the visitors.
From there, Raimo set down the next 10 batters and lasted 7.0 innings, his longest start of the season thus far. Raimo ceded only two hits in the outing, striking out seven and walking four before being lifted.
Sutherland held the Colonials at bay until the seventh when sophomore Tyler Hix reached third with one out. However, he was stranded there after a pair of groundouts and Sutherland set down nine of the final 10 he faced to earn the complete game shutout win.
GW 6, Davidson 5: The Colonials fell behind early when a leadoff error came around to score in the top of the first, but that was just about all first-year Rich Pfluger allowed in his best start in the Buff & Blue.
Pfluger limited the damage in the first, stranding a pair, and then yielded only two base hits over the next five innings, coaxing a double play in the fifth to get out of the only mini-jam during the stretch.
The GW bats came alive in support of their starter, with Hix tying the game after singling and coming around to score on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Colin Brophy in the last of the second. The Colonials moved ahead for good in the last of the fifth with back-to-back two-out RBI singles from senior Dom D'Alessandro and Hix to make it 3-1.
Pfluger ran into trouble in the seventh, giving up an RBI single with one away to end his day after 6.1 frames, his longest career start. Sophomore Trevor Kuncl came on to put out the fire, allowing Pfluger to finish his day by giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits with three strikeouts to improve to 4-0 on the year.
With the lead trimmed to one, the Colonials created some much needed cushion with three runs in the home half of the seventh. Redshirt freshman Derek Ripp went the other way for an RBI single, part of a 2-for-4 game that extended his hitting streak to eight games. Two batters later, first-year Logan Doran notched an RBI single before Brophy tallied his second sac fly of the game to make it 6-2.
All the insurance was needed in the ninth when Davidson closed to within 6-5 on two hits and three walks. An intentional walk loaded the bases with two away before junior Keagan McGinnis ended the game with a strikeout to earn his sixth save of the year.
