Colonials and Wildcats will play doubleheader due to inclement weather
WASHINGTON - GW baseball welcomes in the Davidson Wildcats this weekend for its lone A-10 April home series. Due to expected inclement weather on Friday, the series will now start on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. Sunday's finale is still set for 12 p.m. with all three games streamed on ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT: The Colonials received a strong pitching performance from junior Jaret Edwards on Wednesday at William & Mary, but suffered a 2-1 walk-off loss in Williamsburg, Va. Edwards tossed a season-best 8.0 innings, setting down 13 straight at one point and 20 of the final 23 he faced. The Tribe scored the winning run in the last of the ninth via three walks and an error.
ROTATION STARTING TO SYNC: Edwards quality start was the third time in the last four games that a Colonials starter has allowed one or fewer runs in an outing. Junior Elliott Raimo tossed 5.2 scoreless frames in the series opener at UMass on Friday and senior Nate Woods followed suit with 5.2 spotless frames on Sunday, ceding only a bunt single. Combined, the three hurlers allowed one earned run in 19.1 frames for a 0.47 ERA.
STAT UP-NATE: Junior Nate Fassnacht is still peppering the national rankings entering this weekend's series, ranking in the top 15 in seven different categories. Fassnacht is the third toughest player to strike out in the nation (1 K every 21.7 AB) and is also third in doubles (18), one off the nation's lead. Fassnacht also ranks fifth in hits, sixth in total bases, 11th in average, 13th in runs and 13th in slugging percentage.
FIVE IS THE MAGIC NUMBER: GW has been held to four runs or fewer in each of its last four games, the longest stretch of the year for a team that still ranks 21st in the nation in scoring at 7.5 runs per game. This year, the Colonials are 3-11 when being held to four runs or fewer, compared to an impressive 18-5 when scoring at least five runs.
ABOUT THE WILDCATS: Davidson enters play this weekend at 6-3 in league play, good for fourth place. The Wildcats have won three of their last four, taking two of three from Rhode Island last weekend and besting Presbyterian, 10-8, on Tuesday. Davidson has found its offensive footing in league play, hitting .274 against A-10 teams compared to .250 overall. The Wildcats' 4.44 conference ERA is seventh in the circuit.
SERIES HISTORY: GW is hosting the Wildcats for the second time in three years, taking two of three in the last meeting in 2017. Davidson leads the all-time series though, winning 15 of 19 meetings.
