D'Alessandro launches seventh home run of the season
ARLINGTON, Va. - GW baseball fell into an early hole on Sunday afternoon against Davidson at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park and was unable to complete the comeback, falling 6-5.
Davidson scored all five of its runs in the first two innings, taking an early 1-0 lead on a two-out solo home run in the first. An inning later, a three-run homer and a bases-loaded groundout increased the Wildcats edge to 5-0.
From there, the Colonials bullpen posted a phenomenal combined relief effort, holding the Wildcats without a hit after the second inning. Senior Pat Knight led the charge, tossing 4.0 spotless frames and retiring 12 of the 13 he faced with six punchouts.
GW's offense was unable to get much traction outside of senior Dom D'Alessandro, who got the Colonials on the board with a solo shot in the last of the fourth, his seventh long ball of the year. D'Alessandro reached base in all four plate appearances, finishing a triple shy of the cycle by going 3-for-3 with a double, homer, run scored and RBI.
The Buff & Blue crept a run closer in the fifth on a two-out RBI double from first-year Cade Fergus, closing the gap to 5-2. GW put a pair of runners on in the sixth and seventh, but was unable to scratch across any runs.
The Wildcats tacked on an insurance run in the top of the eighth, but saw the Colonials come right back with three tallies in the home half to close the gap to 6-5. Junior Greg Anderberg provided the spark with a two-run single in the frame with another run crossing on a double play.
However, GW was unable to get the tying run across after being retired in order in the ninth.
GW now hits the road for a four-game swing beginning on Wednesday at Georgetown. First pitch from Bethesda, Md. is set for 7 p.m.
