Levin drives in four to lead offensive charge
ARLINGTON, Va. - Timely hitting, superlative defense and a strong day on the mound led GW baseball to its fourth straight win on Friday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park, defeating Iona, 6-2.
The Colonials welcomed junior Elliott Raimo back to the rotation to start the proceedings, although he was limited to 1.1 frames due to a predetermined pitch count. Junior Jaret Edwards picked up the baton and ran with it, entering in a bases loaded situation with one down in the second inning.
Edwards quickly escaped the jam by inducing a 5-4-3 double play, one of four twin-killing spun by the Colonial defense on the day. GW now leads the NCAA with 25 double plays defensively on the year.
Edwards ceded an unearned run in the third and a tying tally in the fourth, but utilized double plays in each frame to limit the damage. He then retired seven straight to get the game to the later innings.
The Colonials had taken an early 2-0 lead via a two-out, two-strike, two-run triple from first-year Noah Levin in the last of the first, plating junior Nate Fassnacht and senior Dom D'Alessandro, both of whom had singled with two outs.
After Iona tied the game with its two runs, GW moved back ahead for good with more two-out magic in the fifth when first-year Cade Fergus tripled and scored on an infield single from junior Steve Barmakian, who just beat the throw at first.
The Buff & Blue kept the 3-2 lead into the eighth inning when Iona put runners on the corners with two outs. Junior Keagan McGinnis entered out of the bullpen and battled back from a 3-0 count to get a strikeout and swing the momentum back to GW.
The Colonials capitalized by starting the last of the eighth with five straight hits, the biggest of which was a two-run opposite field double from Levin to make it 5-2. Levin came in to score on an RBI groundout to put GW ahead by four.
McGinnis made quick work of the Gaels in the ninth to secure his third save of the season. Edwards earned his fourth win of the year, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits in 6.1 frames of relief.
Levin's four-RBI day established a new career-best as he led a quartet of Colonials with multiple hits. D'Alessandro was 3-for-4 while Fassnacht and sophomore Tyler Hix contributed two hits each to spur the 13-hit attack.
The Colonials and Gaels return to action Saturday afternoon for the middle game of the series, scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
