Colonials pound out season-best 18 hits behind six multi-hit games
The 18 knocks surpassed the previous season high of 17 set twice and marked the seventh time in the last eight games that the Colonials have recorded double-digit hits. The Buff & Blue posted at least 10 runs for the second straight game and fourth time this year.
Senior Dom D'Alessandro led a trio of players with three hits, driving in three runs to bring his total to eight in the last two games. First-year Cade Fergus extended his hitting streak to 11 games with three more hits, scoring three runs and driving in a pair. D'Alessandro and Fergus are tied for the team lead with seven multi-hit games.
Junior Steve Barmakian also had three hits on the day, plating three runs. Junior Nate Fassnacht launched his first home run of the season, a solo shot in the fourth, as part of a 2-for-4 day that extended his hitting streak to 10 games. He also scored four runs.
Sophomore Tyler Hix and first-year Anthony Frechette also notched multi-hit affairs, each going 2-for-5. First-year Noah Levin was the third Colonial to drive in three runs, doing so via a two-run triple and a sacrifice fly.
GW quickly grabbed a 2-0 lead with RBIs from D'Alessandro and Levin in the first but saw the Hawks take a 3-2 edge with a run in the second and two in the third.
The Colonials quickly countered to take the lead for good with five runs in the third inning, starting an avalanche of 12 runs in their next four at-bats to move in front 14-3 through six innings.
The Buff & Blue's bullpen silenced Eastern Shore over the final six frames, limiting the visitors to just two hits and a walk in the time frame. Only five balls left the infield after the third inning, while five Colonials combined for eight strikeouts.
Junior Andrew Wheeler was credited with his first win of the season with a perfect 1-2-3 fourth inning. Classmate Cal Stalzer earned the start and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits with two strikeouts in three innings.
The Colonials are off on Thursday before welcoming Iona to town for a three-game set scheduled to begin on Friday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m., and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
