D'Alessandro, Fergus go yard, combine to drive in nine
Eight of the Colonials' 16 base knocks went for extra bases, including three-run home runs from first-year Cade Fergus and senior Dom D'Alessandro. Both were their respective first round-trippers of the campaign with Fergus' serving as his first career long ball.
Fergus, who was named the A-10 Rookie of the Week for the second straight week on Tuesday, finished a triple shy of the cycle, going 3-for-5 with a double, homer, three runs scored and four RBI. Junior Nate Fassnacht, the two-time defending A-10 Player of the Week, also picked up three hits in a double and two triples, scoring twice and driving in a pair.
D'Alessandro drove in five as part of a 2-for-5 day with the three-run dinger, a sac fly in the first inning and an RBI single in the eighth.
First-years Noah Levin and Derek Ripp and junior Greg Anderberg all contributed a pair of hits, giving GW six players with multi-hit games.
The Colonials scored five runs in their first two at-bats, plating a pair in the first on an error and a sac fly before sophomore Colin Brophy, Fergus, and Fassnacht each drove in runs as part of a three-run second to put GW ahead 5-1.
Fassnacht doubled home another run in the fourth to counter a Towson tally in the top of the frame before D'Alessandro blew the game open with his three-run bomb to left to put GW up 9-2.
Towson capitalized on a two-out error in the sixth to plate four runs and claw within 9-6. However, Fergus was able to answer an inning later with a two-out homer to double the advantage to 12-6. D'Alessandro added his fifth RBI of the day in the eighth, sandwiched between two Towson tallies.
First-year Rich Pfluger earned his first career start and improved to 2-0 on the year, limiting the Tigers to a run on five hits with four strikeouts in 3.0 innings. Five Colonials combined to pitch the final six frames, culminating in the first save of the year for sophomore Kevin Sylvestri, who worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth.
The Colonials are right back in action Wednesday, hosting Maryland Eastern Shore at 3 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and admission is free.
