Colonials welcome Towson, Maryland Eastern Shore to town
WASHINGTON - GW baseball will be right at home during Spring Break, hosting a pair of local foes in mid-week action at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park. The Colonials will welcome in Towson on Tuesday at 3 p.m. and entertain Maryland Eastern Shore on Wednesday at 3 p.m. Both games will be streamed live on ESPN+ and admission is free.
LAST TIME OUT: GW nabbed its third straight series victory by taking two of three against UMass Lowell over the weekend. The Colonials grabbed a 9-6 win on Friday behind six multi-hit performances before falling, 12-1, on Saturday. The Buff & Blue were an out away from dropping the set on Sunday, but tied the game with a two-run double in the last of the ninth and walked off on a run-scoring fielder's choice in the 10th inning.
KEEP ROLLIN', ROLLIN', ROLLIN', ROLLIN': First-year Cade Fergus and junior Nate Fassnacht earned Rookie of the Week and Player of the Week honors on March 4 and kept their hot bats rolling over the weekend. Fergus started his career in a 2-for-17 slump, but has now hit safely in a team-best nine straight games, accruing five multi-hit performances in his last six outings, tied for the most on the squad. During his hitting streak, Fergus is hitting .447 (17-for-38) with three doubles, a triple, 12 runs scored and eight RBI.
Not to be outdone, Fassnacht has hit safely in 11 of GW's 13 games and is the only Colonial to reach base safely in every game. He's currently riding an eight-game hitting streak that featured four straight multi-hit games from Mar. 2-9. Half of his 20 hits have gone for doubles this year, a mark that ranks second in the nation, one off the national lead. His 0.77 doubles per game is the top rate in the NCAA.
SWINGING AWAY: GW's offense has been the catalyst to some early season success, scoring at least four runs in 11 of 13 games. The Colonials are averaging a league-leading 7.8 runs per game, a mark that ranks 28th in the nation. The Buff & Blue are also among the A-10's top three in batting average, runs, hits, doubles, triples, walks and on-base percentage.
IT TAKES TWO: The Colonials turned three double plays to stay in Sunday's game, turning two in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. GW has recorded 20 twin killings in 13 games this season, the second-most in the nation behind only UNLV (21), which has played three more games.
ABOUT THE TIGERS: Towson enters play with a 1-10 mark on the year after being swept in a four-game series over the weekend at Sacramento State. The Tigers opened their season against A-10 foe Davidson, dropping all three games. Tom Flacco paces the squad with a .400 average in seven appearances, driving in three. As a whole, Towson sports a .201 team batting average and a 7.30 team ERA. GW won both matchups last year, 13-2 at home and 9-3 on the road.
ABOUT THE HAWKS: Maryland Eastern Shore is 3-13 on the year following a 1-3 showing this weekend in the Aviary Invite against Lehigh and Monmouth. The Hawks previously encountered A-10 foe Fordham, winning one of the four matchups. UMES is hitting .214 as a team, led by D.J. Doherty's .281 clip in 12 games (11 starts). On the mound, Eastern Shore sports a 6.55 team ERA. GW has won three straight against the Hawks, including an 8-3 triumph last season.
