Colonials down Explorers, 6-1, to start A-10 play 1-0
WASHINGTON - George Washington men's tennis began its year in a unique way with a conference foe out of the gate, but dominated La Salle, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Southeast Tennis and Learning Center.
"This was a great way to start off the spring season and conference play," head coach Rob Castille said. "I was a little unsure how the team would handle the pressure with five first-years in the lineup but I was really pleased overall with how things went.
"We really set the tone in doubles and came out with a lot of energy. I was really happy to see that as doubles has been an emphasis for us. All in all this was a good start to the season."
The Colonials earned the doubles point by sweeping the three matches with Ryan Navarro and Dennis Afanasev providing the highlight in a 6-0 whitewash. Lawrence Sciglitano and Hanyu Liu won their match, 6-1, while top pair Zicheng Zeng and Ben Barnett came out on top, 6-4.
GW followed up by sweeping five of the six singles matches, including wins from first-years Zeng, Navarro, Barnett, and Liu. Afanasev also won in straight sets in his match.
