Rising juniors Barnett, Navarro selected to lead GW
WASHINGTON -Â GW men's tennis head coach Rob Castille announced on Wednesday that rising juniors Ben Barnett and Ryan Navarro have been named co-captains for the 2020-21 season.
"I am excited to name Ryan and Ben as our co-captains for the 2020-2021 year," Castille said. "On a team that is full of leaders, these two stood out to me and will help guide this team through these uncertain times.Â
"Over the past two years, they have gained the respect and confidence of their teammates and the coaching staff. The strengths that they bring to the team complement each other really well, and I can't wait to see them flourish in their new leadership role."Â
A native of Hobart, Australia, Barnett has been a reliable performer since stepping on campus. He earned the team's Most Improved Award as a first-year, anchoring GW's No. 3 singles position and playing in the top doubles pairing. Barnett performed admirably during the truncated 2019-20 season, once again appearing in the top doubles pairing and accruing a 14-9 mark.
Navarro, out of Mississauga, Canada, was a First Team All-Atlantic 10 performer in 2018-19, recording a team-best 18 singles victories while playing at No. 1 and No. 2. He also accrued 21 wins in doubles, the most on the squad. Last year, Navarro was en route to another all-conference honor, posting a 12-8 mark in singles and a team-best 14-4 record in doubles.
In the classroom, both Barnett and Navarro were tabbed as ITA Scholar-Athletes for registering a GPA of at least 3.50 in the 2019-20 academic year. Navarro has led the program in GPA each of his two seasons on campus, holding a 3.94 cumulative GPA.
