GW Baseball Outlasted by FAMU in Extras in Series Finale

TALLAHASSEE - For the third straight game the GW baseball team was on the wrong end of an extra-innings decision as Florida A&M walked off on a fielding error in the bottom of 11th inning to steal a 2-1 win on Sunday in the series finale at Moore-Kittles Field.
A pitching duel ensued between junior starter Robbie Metz and FAMU's Aubrey McCarty, a switch pitcher who changes which arm he throws with between batters, but neither starter factored into the decision.
Metz blinked first, allowing his lone run of the day in the second inning, but otherwise shut down the Rattlers' offense. In his second start of the season, he allowed the single run on six hits with one walk and four strikeouts across 8.1 innings.
McCarty was equally as dominant, surrendering one run while scattering seven hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
After Metz allowed his lone run of the day in the bottom of the second, GW responded immediately to tie the score in the top half of the third. Senior Eli Kashi led off with a single, moved to second on a groundout and then to third on a hit by freshman Nate Fassnacht. Metz then helped his own cause by tying the game with a RBI single.
FAMU nearly ended the game in the bottom of the ninth when Metz found trouble after allowing consecutive one-out singles, but sophomore Will Kobos entered in relief and got the final two outs to send the game to extras.
GW threatened in the top of the 10th on a leadoff double by junior Brandon Chapman but a fielder's choice got him off the bases and FAMU retired the side.
A leadoff walk by FAMU in the bottom of the 10th moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then to third on a groundout before scoring with two outs on a fielding error to end the game.
GW looks to get back in the win column when it returns home to host Georgetown at Tucker Field on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.
