GW Baseball Falls in Rubber Match at Davidson, 8-7

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Sophomore Matt Cosentino went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and junior Bobby Campbell doubled twice with three RBIs but the George Washington baseball team fell, 8-7, in the rubber match at Davidson on Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field.
GW (12-21, 3-3 A-10) led 3-0 through the first three innings after plating a single run in the top of the first and two runs in the third.
Cosentino tripled with one out in the first inning before scoring on a passed ball for GW's first run. In the third, Campbell's sacrifice fly and a RBI double by junior Kevin Mahala extended the Colonials' lead to 3-0.
Davidson (18-14, 6-3 A-10) answered with a RBI single in the bottom of the fourth, but GW pushed the lead back to 4-1 when Mahala lifted a sacrifice fly in the top half of the fifth.
The Wildcats pulled within one run of the lead at 4-3 on a two-run triple in the bottom of the fifth.
GW threatened in the sixth inning, loading the bases after three consecutive two-out singles from juniors Eli Kashi and Joey Bartosic and Cosentino, but Davidson escaped the jam.
The Wildcats took a commanding 8-4 lead after scoring five runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth.
GW attempted a late rally, scoring three runs in the eighth inning, to get the game back to one run at 8-7.
The trio of Kashi, Bartosic and Cosentino found themselves on base following three straight singles ahead of sophomore Robbie Metz, who drove in a run on a fielder's choice RBI. GW added another run on an error and then Campbell made it a one-run game with a RBI double.
The Colonials left two runners on base to end the eighth and were unable to complete the comeback in the ninth.
GW will visit Towson on Tuesday night for a 3:30 p.m. game before returning home to host George Mason in a three-game A-10 series at Tucker Field next weekend.
