TOWSON, Md. - Junior Bobby Campbell went 4-for-5 with three runs, one home run and two RBIs to lead the George Washington baseball team to a 10-2 victory over Towson on Tuesday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.
GW (13-21) has now won three games in a row over Towson (14-19) dating back to last season.
Campbell gave the Colonials a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when he lifted a 2-0 pitch over the wall in left center field. His third long ball of the season scored classmate Cody Bryant, who had earned a two-out walk ahead of him.
Towson got one run back in the bottom of the third on a RBI single by Brady Policelli, but GW responded in the top of the fourth. Campbell led off with a base hit, moved to second on an error and then scored on a RBI single by senior Matthieu Robert to extend the lead to 3-1.
Towson added another run in with a RBI single in the bottom half of the fourth, but it was the last time the Tigers would score on the day.
GW starter Robbie Metz limited the Tigers to a pair of runs on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts across the first four innings before giving way to the bullpen for the remainder of the game.
The Colonials blew the game open by taking a 7-2 lead with a four-run fifth inning. The onslaught started when junior Joey Bartosic reached on an error to lead off the inning. He moved to second on a single by junior Matt Cosentino and then both runners scored on a RBI single and throwing error to push GW's lead to 5-2.
After Campbell extended the inning with a hit to put runners on the corners, junior Kevin Mahala connected on a RBI single to extend the lead to 6-2. Senior Andy Young added his first RBI of the season on a sacrifice bunt to push the advantage to 7-2.
Sophomore Chance Malek relieved Metz to start the fifth inning and threw 2.2 innings of scoreless relief with just one hit allowed. Seniors Randy Dalrymple (0.1 innings) and Luke Olson (2.0 innings) combined to blank Towson in the final 2.1 innings.
GW added insurance with a trio of runs in the top of the ninth inning. Robert drew a one out walk and moved to third base on a single by Young. The duo then perfectly executed a double steal, which allowed Robert to score, to extend the lead to 8-2. Later in the inning, junior Eli Kashi roped a RBI double to left center field, followed by a RBI single by Bartosic, for the final tally of 10-2.
Campbell's four-hit day was the first of his career. Bartosic (2-for-6, one run, one RBI), Bryant (2-for-5, two runs, one RBI) and Robert (2-for-4, one run, one RBI, one walk) also added multiple-hit efforts to fuel the Colonials.
GW returns home to host George Mason for a three-game Atlantic 10 series this weekend. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
