Baseball Drops Thriller to Davidson, 5-4

Despite a late-inning comeback, the George Washington baseball team couldn't secure a crucial Atlantic 10 home win, falling to Davidson, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon. GW drops to 17-24 overall and 9-11 in conference action.
The Wildcats jumped ahead early on, posting three runs in the second and one more in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. After just one hit through the game's first five innings, GW's offense came alive in the sixth when Robbie Lavey laced a double down the right-field line, scoring Charlie Walsh to get the Revolutionaries on the board.
One inning later in the seventh, the Buff & Blue chipped away at the lead with a run scoring on a fielder's choice to Davidson's third baseman. Connor Jones drove in the run, with Nick Mullen scoring from third.
Trailing by two in the eighth, Brodie Freker stepped to the plate in a pinch-hit spot and delivered a mammoth two-run home run over the left-center wall, tying the game up at four and sending the Tucker Field faithful into a frenzy. The homer was Freker's second of the season.
After Davidson recaptured a 5-4 lead in the top of the ninth, GW looked to answer back with the game on the line. After a hit by pitch and a Davidson fielding error put two on for GW, Robbie Lavey stepped to the plate looking to send GW to victory. Lavey floated a ball into shallow left field, but the Wildcats' shortstop made a nice over-the-shoulder catch to secure the win.
Andrew Cutler tossed seven complete innings for GW, allowing four earned runs and striking out six. Colin Lebel pitched the remaining two innings for the Buff & Blue, allowing one unearned run and absorbing the loss, dropping him to 0-3.
GW looks to salvage a win in the series tomorrow, hosting Davidson at 12:00 p.m. once again. Tomorrow's game is Hometown Heroes Day at The Tuck, as local first responders join the patrons of Tucker Field. Tomorrow is also Youth Day, with all kids in attendance invited to run the bases and meet the team following the conclusion of the contest.
