The George Washington baseball team completed a 4-0 week with a 9-3 win over VCU on Sunday, sweeping the Rams in a crucial Atlantic 10 weekend. The Revolutionaries move to 16-22 overall and get back to an even 9-9 in conference games this season.
Â
GW's bats came alive early, with the Buff & Blue driving in two runs in the first. Cristino Tufano knocked in the first, dropping a single into shallow right field to score Jack Kent. Later in the inning, Nick Mullen drove a single into left field, bringing home Robbie Lavey.
Â
GW continued to roll in the second, with Tufano working a bases-loaded walk and Josh Wenz scoring on a fielding error to make it 4-0. First-year Travis Peitz launched a solo home run to left field in the third, making it 5-0 Revolutionaries.
Â
The Buff & Blue momentum carried over into the fourth as GW tacked on three more. Walker tallied GW's sixth run via an RBI groundout, while Nick Mullen tallied his second RBI of the day on a double to score Tufano. Peitz rounded out GW's big inning with an RBI single to left field, plating Mullen.
Â
While GW's bats continued to pour it on, starter Declan Wywoda was dealing on the mound. He kept VCU scoreless until the fourth inning, allowing one in the fourth and one in the sixth in what has been a stellar stretch for GW's pitching staff over the past two weeks. Wywoda finished with six innings pitched, punching out four batters and allowing just two runs.
Â
Gavin Miller relieved Wywoda in the bottom of the seventh, going the rest of the way for GW to earn his first save of the year. Miller allowed one VCU run in the seventh, but the GW Revs answered back in the eighth via an Mullen RBI double to close out the game's scoring.
Â
Wywoda earned the win, moving him to 2-3 on the year, while VCU's Everett Vaughn was charged with the loss, dropping him to 2-1.
Â
GW turns its attention to a DMV battle with Georgetown on Wednesday, facing the Hoyas at Capital One Park in Tysons, Va. First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m. on MuscoVision.
