Behind seven complete innings from Max Haug, the George Washington baseball team hung on late for a 4-3 win over VCU in Friday's series opener. GW improves to 14-22 overall and 7-9 in Atlantic 10 matchups.
Â

GW's bats stayed quiet until the fifth when the Buff & Blue plated two to take its first lead of the day. Christian Dewey tallied GW's first run from second base, scoring on an error by VCU's shortstop. Two batters later, Josh Wenz ripped a double into right-center, scoring Connor Jones to put GW up for good.
Â
Robbie Lavey added to GW's lead in the eighth, singling up the middle to score Wenz from second. The Revolutionaries' lead grew to its largest of the day later in the inning when Conlon Walker singled through the right side, plating Lavey for a 4-1 advantage.
Â
After VCU tallied two of its own in the eighth, GW entered the bottom of the ninth with just a one-run lead. Matt Bruno allowed a baserunner to get into scoring position but put the nail in the coffin with a two-out strikeout to secure his third save of the year. Haug earned the win, his second of the season.
