The George Washington baseball team is set to host its annual Jackie Robinson Award Day on Tuesday, bestowing a member of the program with the Jackie Robinson Award during a special pregame ceremony prior to first pitch against Navy at 3:00 p.m. Following their midweek with the Midshipmen, GW travels to VCU for a weekend series from Friday-Sunday against the Rams. All four games this week will be carried live on ESPN+.
An annual tradition since 2002, George Washington baseball bestows the Jackie Robinson Award on a member of the GW baseball program who best exhibits the qualities that reflect the attributes of the legendary sports hero who famously broke the Major League Baseball color barrier nearly 80 years ago. This year's ceremony will take place at 2:45 p.m. at home plate as the 25th recipient of the award is announced.
Navy enters Tuesday's contest having won four consecutive games and sitting at 22-13 overall. The Midshipmen swept Lafayette in four games over the weekend, outscoring the Leopards 27-11 over the course of the series. Navy is led by Head Coach Chuck Ristano, who's in his third season with the program. Ristano holds a 76-61 record at the helm of the program and won 28 games in his first season in 2023-24. Navy's offense is led by Patrick Walsh, who's batting .296 on the year. He's totaled 32 hits, driving in a team-best 26 RBI. Navy's full 2026 stats can be found here.
VCU, led by second-year Head Coach Sean Thompson, enters the week with a 21-14 overall record and an 11-4 record in A-10 matchups. The Rams trail only Saint Joseph's, who currently sit at 14-1 in conference play, in the current standings across the league. Thompson, who was the youngest Division I head coach in the country last season, finished with a 17-37 in his first year, already surpassing his win total with 20 games to play in 2026. The Rams have also won four consecutive games, including a three-game sweep over Fordham last weekend and a midweek dub against Longwood on April 7.
VCU's offense is paced by Jacob Lee, who's eighth in the conference in batting average at .357. Lee has nine home runs on the season, ranks sixth in the conference with 35 RBI and his 1.131 OPS is second amongst qualified hitters in the A-10. Along with Lee, Nate Kirkpatrick has enjoyed a successful 2026 campaign with a .323 batting average, 34 RBI, 27 runs scored and six homers. On the mound, Patrick Steitz and Hunter Gotschall have been mainstays in the Rams' weekend rotation, with Steitz boasting a 5-1 record and a 1.94 ERA in 55.2 innings pitched. VCU's 2026 stats can be found here.
