JACKSONVILLE - Junior Kevin Mahala went 4-for-5 at the plate with a home run and four RBIs but it was not enough as the George Washington baseball team fell in the rubber match of its three-game series at North Florida, 10-7, on Sunday afternoon at Harmon Stadium.
GW (1-2) fell behind, 1-0, in the first inning to open the game but tied the score in the top of the second when Mahala lifted the first pitch he saw over the wall in left field for his fourth career long ball.
UNF (2-1) pulled ahead, 3-1, in the bottom of the second after a sacrifice fly and RBI single but the Colonials plated five runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-3 lead.
Back-to-back singles by sophomores Mark Osis and Robbie Metz opened the fifth, ahead of junior Bobby Campbell who delivered a RBI single to make the score 3-2. Junior Andrew Selby followed with a RBI double to tie the score at 3-3 and then Mahala cleared the bases with a two-run double to the gap in left center field.
After a pitching change, junior Eric Ramsey ripped a RBI single down the right field line to extend the lead to 6-3.
Mahala added to the lead with his career-high fourth RBI of the game, a run-scoring single in the top of the fourth, to push the lead to four runs at 7-3.
The Osprey's, though, responded with a five-run sixth inning to take an 8-7 lead and added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh en route to the 10-7 victory.
Mahala was one of five Colonials to record a multiple-hit game on Sunday. Campbell finished with three hits and one RBI while Osis (2-for-4, one run, one walk), Metz (2-for-4, two runs) and Selby (2-for-4, one double, one run, one RBI) added two hits apiece. Senior Jacob Williams took the loss after allowing five runs on six hits two two walks and one strikeout across five innings. Austin Drury earned the win in relief for the Ospreys with two scoreless innings.
GW will host Delaware State in its home opener on Tuesday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
