WASHINGTON - Junior Shane Sweeney struck out nine batters across five shutout innings and the bullpen provided four innings of scoreless relief as the George Washington baseball team won its home opener over Delaware State, 8-0, on Thursday evening at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
Sweeney, making his first career start for GW (2-2) after transferring in from Community College of Baltimore County Catonsville, struck out multiple batters in all but one inning of work and only once allowed a baserunner to advance past second base.
The Colonials took a 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning and never looked back. Junior Joey Bartosic led off with an infield single and moved up to second on a base hit by sophomore Mark Osis. With one out, the pair successfully converted a double steal, with Bartosic taking advantage of a throwing error by Delaware State's (0-5) catcher for a 1-0 lead.
Later in the first, junior Bobby Campbell lifted a RBI double to center field to extend the lead to 2-0.
Sweeney worked out of a jam in the top of the second and allowed just one hit across his final three innings of work before giving way to freshman Justin Friedman to open the sixth inning. The rookie worked a scoreless sixth before the Colonials blew the game open in the bottom half of the inning.
GW took advantage of two separate errors to plate the first two runs of the inning before Campbell smoked a two-run double to the gap in right center field to extend the lead to 6-0.
The offense continued the onslaught in the seventh inning as senior Matthieu Robert (RBI double) and Bartosic (RBI fielder's choice) each knocked in a run to push the lead to 8-0.
Friedman worked 2.2 innings of scoreless relief with two walks and four strikeouts. He exited the game in the eighth with a runner on first and two outs, before senior Randy Dalrymple entered and got the final out to keep the visitors off the scoreboard.
Junior Eddie Muhl worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to complete the shutout. Campbell finished 2-for-5 with two doubles, one run, one walk and three RBIs to pace the offense.
Osis was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs while sophomore Robbie Metz (2-for-4, one walk) and junior Andrew Selby (2-for-4, one walk) each reached base three times, respectively.
GW will travel back to Florida for the second straight weekend to compete in the RussMatt Invitational in Winter Haven. The Colonials will play a pair of games against Kent State (Fri., 11 a.m. & Sat., 2:30 p.m.) and a single game against Ball State (Sun., 11:00 a.m.).
