WASHINGTON - The George Washington baseball team extended its win streak to four games with a 6-4 win over UMBC on Tuesday afternoon at Tucker Field.
With the win, GW (14-8) improves to 12-4 at Tucker Field this season and has now won seven of its last 10 games overall.
Freshman Kevin Hodgson picked up his first collegiate win after pitching 3.2 innings of relief. He allowed two unearned runs on four hits with one walk and five strikeouts after relieving starter Brady Renner. Renner allowed one earned run in 1.1 innings.
UMBC (10-10) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning before the Colonials responded to tie the score in the bottom half. Sophomore Kevin Mahala led off with a double to the gap in left centerfield and then scored on a RBI double by sophomore Eli Kashi.
After a scoreless third inning, the Colonials plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good.
Mahala and freshman Matt Cosentino hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning and the pair advanced to second and third on a groundout. Sophomore Joey Bartosic then reached on an error to score Mahala and give the Colonials a 2-1 lead.
Freshman Robbie Metz followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 3-1. Sophomore Bobby Campbell was up next and drilled a RBI double through the hole in the left side of the infield to score Bartosic and put the Colonials on top, 4-1.
Mahala added a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth to extend GW's lead to 5-1, but the Retrievers answered with a trio of runs in the top of the sixth, aided by an error, to pull within one run of the lead at 5-4.
GW added a key insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Metz led off with a single, advanced to third on a pair of groundouts and scored on a RBI single by sophomore Andrew Selby.
Junior Luke Olson pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief out of the bullpen before sophomore Eddie Muhl came on to work a scoreless ninth and earn his Atlantic 10 leading eighth save of the season.
Campbell finished 3-for-4 with one double and one RBI while Mahala was 2-for-3 with two runs, one double and one RBI. Metz also picked up his team-leading 10th multiple-hit game of the season by finishing 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
GW will return to action on Wednesday afternoon with a visit to Mount St. Mary's for a non-conference game at 3:30 p.m. The Colonials defeated The Mount, 10-1, on March 18.
