ARLINGTON – The George Washington baseball team evened its series with VCU, capturing a 4-3 win on 90s Day at Tucker Field. The Revolutionaries improve to 17-13 on the season and move to 6-5 in A-10 action.
GW's offense came early, scoring all four of its runs in the first two innings of the game. Ellis Schwartz notched the game's first run, tallying an RBI single up the middle to score Ty Acker from second base. One batter later, Charlie Rogan doubled GW's lead, ripping a single through the left side to plate Jude Clough.
After GW worked the bases loaded in the second, Greg Marmo was walked, scoring Brodie Freker to make GW's advantage 3-0. The Buff & Blue scored its final run of the game later in the inning when Clough hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Charlie Walsh.
Declan Wywoda was stellar on the mound for GW, setting the tone early for the home pitching staff. Unfortunately, after tossing 3.2 hitless innings to open the game, Wywoda took a liner off the elbow, prematurely ending his outing. Matt Bruno stepped in after Wywoda's exit, tossing 3.0 frames in relief and allowing three runs, two of which were earned. He struck out three batters and was ultimately credited with the win, moving him to 3-0 this season.
With a runner in scoring position and two outs in the seventh, Andrew Cutler came on to relieve Bruno and preserve GW's advantage. Cutler was eventually able to get out of a bases-loaded jam, maintaining a 4-3 lead for the Buff & Blue. VCU threatened again in the eighth with runners on the corners and two outs, but Cutler ended all hopes of a comeback to nail down the win. He tossed 2.1 innings, picking up his team-leading fifth save of the year.
After a hot start, GW's offense was kept relatively quiet for the rest of the day. After tallying five hits in the first two innings, the Revolutionaries tallied just three the rest of the way. Acker was the lone Revolutionary to tally multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-3 from the plate with a run scored. GW's remaining six hits were spread out across six batters.
Both clubs return to The Tuck for the rubber match, with a new start time of 10:00 a.m. in Arlington. Live coverage will still be available on ESPN+.
