ARLINGTON, Va. – Senior Ty Acker sent the Buff & Blue faithful home happy on Friday evening, delivering a walk-off three-run home run to lift the George Washington baseball team over George Mason, 4-3. The win is GW's fourth in a row and improves the team's record to 14-11 this season.
GW's Michael Foltz Jr. and George Mason's Sam Lavin mowed through the opposing lineups for the first half of the game, only allowing a combined five hits over the first five innings of scoreless baseball. Three of those hits came from GW bats, but the Revolutionaries were unable to capitalize with traffic on the bases.
The Patriots finally got to Foltz in the sixth, tagging him for three runs on a home run from Jake Butler. Foltz walked the first two batters in the inning before giving up the long ball to left-center. After eventually getting out of the inning, Foltz's day was done after six frames. He finished with six strikeouts and just four hits allowed.
In the home half of the inning, the Revolutionaries answered with a run of their own. After Greg Marmo reached on a single to left field, Robbie Lavey drove him in with a deep double to right field. The run pulled GW within two at 3-1, where the score would sit until the bottom of the ninth inning.
Andrew Cutler was tasked with relieving Foltz in the seventh and dazzled with three strong innings of scoreless work. The 6-3 righty allowed just two hits and struck out three to keep the Patriots off the scoreboard.
In ninth, still trailing 3-1, GW's inning didn't start promising. Both Lavey and Jude Clough were sat down on three pitches, leaving the Buff & Blue to their final out. Ellis Schwartz was the first Revolutionary on base, shooting a single back up the middle. He was followed up by Charlie Rogan, who was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second with Acker stepping to the plate. On a 1-1 count, Acker connected on an off-speed pitch, lifting it to deep right-center field for the walk-off. The homer was Acker's third of the season and gave him 22 RBI, which leads the Buff & Blue.
Cutler was credited with the win for GW, improving him to a perfect 4-0 on the season. Daniel Elliott was charged with the loss, dropping him to 2-1. The GW Revs' offense tallied seven hits in the game, with Schwartz tallying multiple knocks. George Mason notched just six hits in the series opener.
The teams return to The Tuck tomorrow, with first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m. The contest will also be Youth Day at the ballpark. All kids ages 12 and under can run the bases postgame and take part in an exclusive autograph session with GW players and coaches.
Parking and admission for all GW home games this season are free to all fans.
