Robbie Lavey got things started early for the GW Revs, launching a three-run homer to right field to put the Buff & Blue on top in the first. Sam Gates and Greg Marmo, GW's one and two hitters in the game, both scored on Lavey's blast.
After George Mason got one back in the third, GW quickly answered with three more runs of their own in the home half of the inning. The inning was kickstarted when Marmo laced a double into right-center, scoring Gates from first base. Later in the inning, Lavey came up clutch again, singling through the right side of the infield to score Marmo. Ty Acker capped off the frame with an RBI on a fielder's choice, improving GW's lead to 6-1.
Mason's offense wasn't done yet as the visitors put up three runs in the fifth inning to cut GW's lead to just two. Teddy Brennan's day ended in the fifth for GW as the starter went four innings and allowed four earned runs. He struck out five batters and allowed five hits.
In the sixth, GW got a much-needed insurance run off the bat of Charlie Rogan. Rogan ripped a single up the middle on an 0-2 count, scoring Walsh to make it 7-4 GW. The Revolutionaries tallied run number eight in the seventh off a bases-loaded walk to Sam Gates, growing the GW Revs' lead to 8-4.
George Mason made one last attempt at a comeback in the eighth, tallying three runs in the frame to pull within one. After Cade Davis shut down the inning at 8-7, he closed the door on the Patriots in the ninth, securing the win for the Buff & Blue.
Max Haug was credited with the win for GW after tossing 3.1 innings in relief of Brennan. Haug allowed two earned runs and struck out four of the 15 batters he faced. Davis picked up the save, his second of the year in 1.2 innings of action.
Lavey led the way offensively, finishing 3-for-5 from the plate with four RBI and two runs scored. Ellis Schwartz also had a three-hit day, while Acker and Walsh each tallied two hits apiece. GW's offense finished with 13 total hits, while the Patriots notched 11.
GW and GM return to The Tuck tomorrow for the series finale at noon. Follow live stats on GWsports.com as the Revolutionaries look to sweep their first A-10 series of the season.
