ARLINGTON – George Mason avoided the sweep on Sunday afternoon, dropping the George Washington baseball team in eight innings, 11-1. GW now holds a 15-12 overall record, and both teams move to 5-4 in conference play after three full weeks of A-10 action.
George Mason capitalized on early GW fielding mistakes, scoring five unearned runs off starter Declan Wywoda in the second inning. The Patriots' first two batters reached on errors, resulting in eight Mason batters making plate appearances in the inning. Wywoda tossed 1.2 total innings and didn't allow any earned runs in his second start of the season.
The Revolutionaries scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the second, scratching one across on an RBI single from Cristino Tufano. Ty Acker scored from second on the play.
George Mason proceeded to post two runs in the seventh and four in the eighth to secure the win and avoid the sweep. Despite the loss, GW has won two A-10 series in a row, including last week's pair of victories at Rhode Island.
The Revolutionaries return to The Tuck next Friday, welcoming VCU for three games in Arlington. The entire series will be carried on ESPN+. Prior to welcoming the Rams, GW will travel to Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday for a 3:00 p.m. contest, also on ESPN+.
