EMMITSBURG, Md. – Timely hits and clutch performances from GW's bullpen down the stretch were just enough as the George Washington baseball team topped Mount St. Mary's, 6-5, in comeback fashion on Tuesday afternoon. The GW Revs move to 16-12 on the season ahead of this weekend's A-10 series against VCU.
The first three innings were controlled by the Mountaineers as the home team posted four runs to take a 4-0 lead. MSM scored one in the first, one in the second and two in the third to jump on top quickly.
Similar to many of GW's games this season, a slow start didn't deter them, as the GW Revs slowly clawed back with three runs of their own over the fourth and fifth innings. Robbie Lavey got GW on the scoreboard in the fourth inning, singling to drive in Ty Acker from third base. In the fifth, it was Acker driving in the run, this one also via a single to score Cristino Tufano. One batter later, Greg Marmo got in on the action, reaching on a fielder's choice and bringing home Charlie Walsh on the RBI to bring GW within one.
Mount St. Mary's answered in the home half of the fifth with a run of their own, but that'd be the last time they would score as GW's stingy bullpen halted the home team's momentum.
Lavey knotted things up in the seventh, ripping a double into the left-center gap, scoring both Marmo and Walsh to even things up at five apiece. Later in the inning, the Revolutionaries took their first lead of the game when Ellis Schwartz reached on a fielding error by the Mountaineers. With two outs in the inning and a runner on third, Schwartz popped up to the third baseman, but the ball was dropped, allowing Schwartz to reach safely and Lavey to score.
Over the final four innings of action, Gavin Miller and Andrew Cutler shut Mount St. Mary's offense down, allowing just three hits and securing the win. Miller tossed the sixth and seventh, earning his second win of the season, while Cutler was credited with his fourth save of the year after nailing down innings eight and nine.
Offensively, Acker and Lavey led the way with three hits apiece. Lavey drove in three RBI and scored one run, while Acker notched an RBI and a run scored as well. Marmo went hitless but reached base four times on walks, scoring one run for the Buff & Blue. Walsh (two hits) and Tufano (one hit) accounted for the rest of GW's offense in the game.
GW returns to action on Friday, welcoming VCU in Atlantic 10 action. This weekend's series will be "Decades Weekend" at The Tuck. Each game will feature various decade-specific themes such as videoboard graphics, music and other promotions. Friday's game will be centered around the 1980s, Saturday will be the 1990s and Sunday will be the 2000s.
