Baseball Completes Improbable Rally to Stun Rhode Island
3/23/2025 7:21:00 PM | Baseball
Sunday's finale stayed on brand with the rest of the series, seeing both offenses put up runs early in the game. Rhode Island struck first, plating two in the opening inning to capture the early advantage. The lead didn't last long as GW scored two runs of its own to knot the game in the top of the second. Ellis Schwartz tallied the first off an RBI double to left-center, then Josh Wenz plated the equalizer on a double down the left-field line.
Neither team scored again until the fifth when Rhody retook a 4-2 lead. Teddy Brennan, GW's starter in the contest, had only allowed one hit until the fifth, a solid day overall for the senior lefty.
In the seventh, the GW Revs captured its first lead of the game, plating four runs to make it a 6-4 ballgame. The first came off another double from Schwartz, while Wenz also came up clutch again with an RBI single to right field. Charlie Walsh gave the GW Revs the lead with a two-RBI single to right, scoring both Wenz and Cristino Tufano.
In the home half of the inning, Rhode Island put up five more runs to take a 9-6 advantage, its largest lead of the game. All hope looked lost in the ninth for GW with two outs and no runners on, trailing by three. Walsh got the rally started with a walk, then Greg Marmo stepped to the plate and tallied a single. Conlon Walker also worked a walk to load the bases, before Rogan did the same thing to drive a run in and make it a 9-7 ballgame.
With the bases still loaded, Jude Clough launched a double into left-center, clearing the bases and recapturing a 10-9 lead for GW. In total, GW saw five-straight batters reach base successfully, all coming on the team's final out of the game.
Now sporting a narrow one-run lead, first-year Declan Wywoda thwarted the idea of extra innings or a URI rally, sitting Rhody down 1-2-3 to secure the win. Wywoda moves to 2-2 on the year after tossing 2.1 innings and allowing one earned run. Max Haug also had a solid day in relief, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings and striking out three.
GW's offense tallied 10 hits in the game, with Schwartz, Wenz and Marmo each recording two apiece. Clough led the team with three big RBI, while Schwartz, Wenz and Walsh each added two as well.
GW returns to action on Wednesday at VMI for a midweek battle before hosting George Mason next weekend for an A-10 and DMV clash. First pitch for Wednesday's game is slated for 6:00 p.m. with live coverage available on ESPN+.
