Baseball Splits A-10 Doubleheader vs. Fordham
3/15/2025 8:51:00 PM | Baseball
GAME ONE
The bats were hot early on Saturday as both teams tallied three runs apiece in the first inning. The Rams got help plating their courtesy of two errors in the field from the Buff & Blue. In the home half of the inning, GW bounced back to tie the game, with the inning kickstarted by a leadoff homer from Sam Gates, his first of the season. Robbie Lavey later doubled to left-center and Conlon Walker singled through the right side to both record RBIs in the frame.
Both pitching staffs locked in after being roughed up early, going the next six innings without allowing a run. GW allowed seven base runners in that time frame but managed the game well to keep the Rams on the scoreboard. Fordham's arms were much more stingy, only allowing three Revolutionaries on base the rest of the game.
In the eighth, Fordham took a three-run lead, stringing together two hits and a hit by pitch to take a 6-3 lead. The Rams also stole third base in the inning, symbolic of an aggressive day on the bases, with Fordham stealing eight total bags on the day. An inning later in the ninth, Fordham tacked on one more run to seal the 7-3 win.
Teddy Brennan tossed 4.1 innings for GW in the start. The senior lefty allowed three earned runs in the first before navigating traffic on the bases nicely in the second and third innings. Brennan also notched nine strikeouts on the day and threw 105 total pitches. Max Haug tossed three innings in relief, allowing three earned runs and striking out two. Haug was charged with the loss for GW, his first of the season.
GW's offense was limited to just six hits on the day, each coming from a different player. Gates (home run) and Lavey (double) were the only two that went for extra bases. Cristino Tufano, Charlie Rogan, Ellis Schwartz and Walker each added a single.
GAME TWO
For the second game in a row, Sam Gates launched a leadoff home run for the Buff & Blue, giving him his second of the day and second this season in the nightcap. That'd be the last offense for a while as both teams went quiet until the sixth inning.
GW's lead doubled in the sixth off an error from Fordham's left fielder. Robbie Lavey ripped a single to left, with Gates advancing to third base. The Rams' defender dropped the ball on the transfer, allowing Gates to advance home and score.
After Fordham plated two in the seventh and neither team scored in the eighth, GW entered the bottom of the ninth looking for its first walk-off of the season. GW wasted no time, having the first three batters reach base successfully to load the bases. That brought Walker up with no outs and a chance to win the game for GW. Fordham adjusted its defense to put five players on the infield and just two in the outfield, and Walker placed a ball perfectly past the right fielder to win the game for the Revolutionaries.
The victory improves GW to 9-10 this season and 1-2 in A-10 play. Shugy Klein pitched well in his sixth start of the season, tossing three scoreless innings and allowing two hits on 50 pitches. Graham Jeffries gave GW three innings out of the bullpen, allowing two earned runs but no hits on the day. Andrew Cutler earned the win, moving him to 2-0 this year. Cutler also tossed three innings, allowing two hits and striking out two.
GW returns to The Tuck on Tuesday, hosting Mt. St. Mary's at 3:00 p.m. Live coverage will be available on ESPN+.
