Baseball Powers Past Mount St. Mary’s, 6-5

ARLINGTON, Va. – Behind homers from Jude Clough and Robbie Lavey, the George Washington baseball team topped Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday afternoon, 6-5. The win is GW's second in a row and 10th this season.
Lavey got things started early for GW, blasting a solo home run over the right-center wall. The homer was Lavey's first of the season, pulling him into a tie for third on the team with 13 RBI. First-year Declan Wywoda earned the start for GW, the first of his collegiate career. After navigating traffic and keeping a clean sheet through the first three innings, the Mountaineers found the scoreboard in the fourth, chasing Wywoda with a three-run homer to right field.
GW drew even in the sixth when Clough tallied the third home run of the afternoon, this one a two-run homer to left field. Scoring on the play was Lavey to draw the score even at three. Later in the inning, junior Greg Marmo put GW ahead for good, ripping a single to center field, scoring Ellis Schwartz from second base.
The Buff & Blue added two more runs to its lead in the eighth when Ty Acker tallied a two-run single to left field. Conlon Walker and Clough both scored on the play to double-up The Mount, 6-3.
Despite the Mountaineers tallying two runs in the ninth, Andrew Cutler put any hopes of a comeback away, getting Mount St. Mary's to hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game. The save is Cutler's second of the season, while Tyler Blankenship earned the win, moving him to 1-0.
Lavey, Clough and Marmo each tallied two hits apiece, accounting for six of the team's nine in the game. Clough finished with two RBI and a run, while Marmo drew two walks, tallied an RBI and scored one run. Sam Gates, Schwartz and Acker accounted for GW's other three hits on the day.
The Buff & Blue return to action Friday, opening a three-game series on the road at Rhode Island. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. in Kingston.
