ARLINGTON, Va. – The George Washington baseball team suffered a 3-2 loss to Fordham on Friday afternoon, falling to 8-9 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.
After a scoreless first, GW got on the scoreboard with an RBI single in the second. Conlon Walker was the third GW Rev to reach safely in the inning, shooting a bouncer through the right side to score Charlie Rogan from second base. Despite having the bases loaded with only one out, GW couldn't capitalize further as Fordham got out of the inning with just one run given up.
Despite a low-scoring affair, both starters frequently allowed baserunners throughout. Fordham finally broke through in the seventh inning, touching up GW starter Michael Foltz Jr. with a run via an RBI single to center field. An inning later, the Rams put up two more runs after loading the bases with no outs. Foltz, who started the eighth, was on the hook for both runners. He finished his afternoon with 100 total pitches and five strikeouts.
With the game on the line in the ninth, Ty Acker belted a solo home run to right center to bring GW within one, the game's first and only extra-base hit. Unfortunately, the Revolutionaries couldn't plate the equalizer, as Fordham hung on for the 3-2 win.
Fordham's Robbie Stewart pitched four innings in relief, tossing 67 total pitches in his first win of the season. He moves to 1-1 overall after starter Aidan Dowd tossed five innings and allowed one earned run. Foltz was charged with the loss for GW, moving him to 3-2 this season. Matt Bruno pitched two hitless innings in relief for the Buff & Blue, tallying one strikeout.
The teams will conclude the series tomorrow in a doubleheader at Tucker Field. Game one will begin at 11:00 a.m. All home games for GW this season are free to all fans.
