WASHINGTON – The George Washington baseball team picked up its first series win of the season, splitting its doubleheader with Holy Cross on Sunday afternoon. The Revolutionaries tallied a 6-3 victory in game one but couldn't complete the sweep in the nightcap, falling 8-2.
GAME ONE
After falling behind by a run in the first, GW bounced back in a big way with three runs in the home half of the inning. Jude Clough got the GW Revs on the scoreboard, ripping a double to left center, scoring Sam Gates to pull the team even. Later in the inning, Ellis Schwartz blasted a two-run homer, his second of the season, to put GW up 3-1.
After the Crusaders tallied one in the fourth, Swartz got it back for GW an inning later in the fifth, hitting a sacrifice fly to the shortstop, who caught the ball in shallow left field to score Cristino Tufano.
An inning later, Tufano recorded his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot to left field, scoring Gates on the play and putting GW up 6-2. The Crusaders notched one more run in the eighth, but GW's pitching staff thwarted any hopes of a comeback, nailing down the 6-3 win.
Teddy Brennan earned his second start of the season, tossing 4.1 innings and allowing one earned run. He punched out five batters and walked six. Andrew Cutler picked up his first win of the season in relief, tossing 3.2 frames and allowing a run. Cutler struck out four and allowed just three hits. Cade Davis pitched the ninth for GW, a seven-pitch, three-up, three-down showing.
GAME TWO
In the second half of the doubleheader, Holy Cross' offense got out to a fast start, putting up a run in the top of the first. Charlie Rogan tied the ball game in the bottom of the inning via a solo homer to left center, his first of the season.
Tyler Jones was responsible for GW's other run, hitting a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Schwartz from third. Holy Cross' offense notched runs in the fourth and fifth and five in the seventh to put away the win, the team's second of the season.
Shugy Klein started on the bump for GW, pitching four innings and allowing two runs. He was charged with the loss, moving him to 0-2 this season. First-year Declan Wywoda, who entered the game for two innings in relief, faced off against his brother Jaden Wywoda, a pitcher on the Crusader's staff who started game two. Declan tossed two innings for the Buff & Blue, allowing one earned run and striking out one batter.
GW returns to action on Tuesday, hosting crosstown foe Georgetown at Tucker Field. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
