WASHINGTON – Michael Foltz Jr. bounced back in a big way on Saturday, tossing seven shutout innings and leading the George Washington baseball team to an 8-0 win over Holy Cross in the team's home opener. GW improves to 1-3 on the season and concludes its series with the Crusaders tomorrow at Tucker Field.
After struggling in the team's season-opening series a week ago at USC, Foltz stepped on the Tucker Field bump and dominated opposing batters, fanning eight en route to his first win of the season. He allowed just six hits in the outing, tossing 96 total pitches for the Buff & Blue. The performance anchored GW's defense, which didn't commit an error in the contest, en route to the team's first shutout of the season. Junior Max Haug entered the game in the eighth in relief of Foltz, tossing two more scoreless frames to seal the win.
GW's offense got going in the third inning when sophomore Robbie Lavey shot a double down the left field line, scoring Cristino Tufano from first base. Lavey was big for the GW Revs on Saturday, leading the offense with three hits and two RBI.
In the fourth, first-year Charlie Walsh tallied his first collegiate RBI, bringing two home on a single to right field, extending the GW advantage to 3-0. One inning later, Charlie Rogan got in on the action, tallying an RBI groundout to the shortstop, scoring Lavey from third base.
The eighth inning removed all doubt as GW doubled its lead to the eventual final score of 8-0. The first run of the frame came via a Sam Gates RBI single to center field, while the second was via Lavey's bat again, this time an RBI single to left field, once again scoring Tufano. Schwartz put the finishing touches on the game, ripping a two-RBI double to right center.
Lavey and Schwartz both tallied three hits in the game, tops for the GW Revs on the day, while Gates and Rogan finished with a pair of hits each. Tufano, Lavey and Conlon Walker each scored two runs apiece for GW as well.
The Buff & Blue return to The Tuck tomorrow, hosting Holy Cross for a doubleheader starting at 10:00 a.m. Game two of the slate will begin roughly 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first contest. Fans can follow live stats for both games at GWsports.com.
